When Mothers Pray

The special day that the greeting card industry created especially for Mothers is upon us. It is unfortunate that we only have one day out of 365 to recognize those who have the most challenging of jobs—building and developing godly character in the lives of our children—training each child in the way he or she is to go. Our children are tomorrow’s leaders: presidents, ministers, educators, inventors, and developers of new technology.

In today’s society this responsibility has become increasingly more difficult as many mothers have full time jobs outside the home, not to mention the threat of violence in our schools, the pressure of “keeping up with the Joneses” and the rising cost of education, just to name a few. Family, friends, peers, the media, and caregivers, who may not have our same values, influence our children.

So, how should we stay strengthened amid all the pressures? How do we overcome worry? How do we mold the lives of our children as caring, loving individuals, and establish them in their walk with God? These questions demand answers and become more significant with each passing year. Mothers from past generations have wanted answers to these same perplexing enigmas. The solution is wrapped up in one powerful word – prayer.

Several years ago when our four children were small, after a personal encounter with Jesus, I began to communicate with Him about my concerns for our children, and my feelings of inadequacy as a mother. Prayer became my salvation, and new parenting skills were born out of love and faith in God. Aware of His presence, I was no longer driven by fear.

One morning the telephone rang, and when I answered it a distressed mother shared the worries and fears that plagued her. She couldn’t seem to shake the feeling that something dreadful was going to happen. Realizing that she was perpetuating her anxiety, and communicating her fears and insecurities to her children, she wanted a solution. The prayer of faith transformed her thinking, and her fears were dispelled as she addressed her worries with scriptural prayers of affirmation.

In Prayers That Avail Much for Mothers and Prayers That Avail Much Commemorative Edition, I share many of the prayers that helped me approach God confidently and intelligently, and I know that these prayers avail much. Our children are adults today with children of their own.

These written prayers of faith will dispel negative thinking; drive away gloom and doom. The prayers of commitment will renew your mind, and accentuate your faith in God.

Learn to pray intense prayers – fervent prayers for children with special needs, safety at school, for a child’s learning ability, your teenager, your child’s future. Many other payers will help you develop a powerful faith in God. If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed…all these things will be possible for you (Matthew 17:20-21).

Mother, praying will transform you, and greatly affect the atmosphere in your home. Your own behavior will be marked by thoughtfulness, truthfulness, and love. The light in your eyes will bring your family joy. In Raising Your Children for Christ, Andrew Murray wrote, “Parents must be what they want their children to be.”

Remember, nothing is impossible with God, and nothing is impossible to the person who believes. You can talk with God about anything, and He has the answer. God is with you, God is helping you and God is for you.

Have a wonderful Mother’s Day!
