Doing Good
Upon awakening my mind was flooded with song: “Sunshine, sunshine in my soul today.” The words were from a song that we had sung in our church when I was a young girl. Filled with joy of hope and promise of spring, I searched for the composer and the story behind the message. Everyone has a story, everyone is part of history and “every action you take will reflect in someone else’s life, someone else’s future.” (Ginny Dye) This song that was written long ago is impacting my life for good. The composer, Eliza E. Hewitt, had been in bed for six months due to a back injury. When she was finally released from her body cast and able to leave the house for a walk in the park, she reveled in the joy of freedom and the beauty of the day. She was inspired to write the lyrics of a hymn, Sunshine in My Soul, that would live on in the hearts and minds of believers from year to year. Eliza lived all her life in Philadelphia where she was Sunday School superintendent at the Northern Home for Friendless Children, and later at the Calvin Presbyterian Church. A prolific hymn writer, she had no way of knowing that in the year of 2016 her hymn would resound within the heart of a woman who needed encouragement and strength for the day! Your works are passed down from generation to generation.
PRAYER
Father, I will look for occasions to bring healing, to strengthen and bless others. I purpose to do good every time it is possible. I will not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of my hand to do so. If my enemy is hungry, I will feed him; if he is thirsty, I will give him a drink. In the name of Jesus, I will overcome evil with good. Amen.
