No matter what others may think about you, it is what you believe about yourself that determines how you react to the circumstances of life. It may have been in early childhood, teenage years, or even later when you believed a lie that opened the door for depression and anxiety to enter your life. After all, we are born into a world of darkness to parents, who like all of us, make mistakes.
From my own experience, my parents loved me and my siblings. My dad was a beloved pastor and Bible teacher, and my mother was a multi-talented woman who was subservient to her husband. We were to be examples to the other children in our church, which led me to believe that appearances were more important than relationships. I received the approval of adults when I looked the part of the “perfect” pastor’s daughter, and as a result, I focused more on looking right than I did on loving others.
As you consider the following list of lies many have believed, let me encourage you to make your personal list and replace each lie with truth. Once you identify the lie, you open the door to truth that will free you!
The Lie:
I am not good enough.
I am not smart enough.
I am stupid.
I am a mistake.
I am unworthy of being loved.
I am a failure.
I can never measure up.
No one likes me.
I can’t do anything right.
I’m not worth the salt in my bread.
God is angry with me.

Prayer
My God, a dark mood is attempting to move in on me, but I choose to lift up my soul into Your presence! You are here for me! You will not allow depression, guilt, shame, and anxiety to gloat over me or overtake me. Lord, direct me throughout my journey, so I can experience Your plans for my life. Reveal the life-paths that are pleasing to You, and escort me along the way. Take me by the hand and teach me.
For You are the God of my salvation, and I have wrapped my heart into Yours. Thank You for forgiving my failures. Give me grace, Lord! Always look at me through Your eyes of love—Your forgiving eyes of mercy and compassion. I have discovered how easy You are to please—so faithful and true!
Joyfully You teach me the proper path, even when I go astray. Keep showing me Your path and lead me into the best decision. Your perfection and faithfulness are my bodyguards, for You are my hope. I trust in You as my only protection.
God, I believe the plans You have for me are for good and not for disaster, to give me a future and a hope. I am Your own handiwork, Your workmanship, recreated in Christ Jesus. I am born anew to do those good works You planned for me. I take paths which You prepared ahead of time for me, so I may live the good life You lovingly prepared for me. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
