Employment

It was many years ago when I was visiting a good friend of mine. Her mother invited me to stay for supper (we didn’t call it dinner in those days). She prepared supper, my friend and I set the table and waited for her father who was later than usual. They were a happy family who loved the Lord, were active in their church. Little did we know that this father and husband, who had been diligent to provide for his family, was headed home with a heavy heart. How could he tell them that he had been fired? It was so humiliating and unfair. He had an excellent work record but now, less than 5 years away from retirement, he was told that he was no longer needed. He had seen this happen to others, but because he was in corporate he felt that he had job security. This family’s retirement had been snatched away; their dreams of moving out of the city shattered, but I’ll never forget his declaration of faith. With tears in his eyes, he maintained his faith in God and assured his family that their Heavenly Father would provide. He added action to his faith: the next Monday he was busy looking for a job, and God did provide.

PRAYER:
Father, we pray for those in our nation who have lost their jobs. You promised, and we believe that You supply to the full their every need. You know their work records and what they are doing. We ask You to set before them doors of employment that no one is able to shut. We pray that they will prize Wisdom and acknowledge that You are the One who gives power to get wealth. In everything they do give them the grace to put You first, and You will direct them and crown their efforts with success. Cause them to increase in Wisdom and in Favor with You, Father, and with man, in the name of Jesus. Amen. (Employment, Prayers That Avail Much Commemorative Edition)
