Lynn Copeland
To say that nurturing didn’t come easy to me is an understatement. I never thought of myself as maternal—and to be honest, most of my friends probably agreed. I married my best friend simply wanting to build a life with him, but God had other plans.
After seven years of marriage, we had five children in six-and-a-half years. I often felt overwhelmed and inadequate, until one day in church I heard the Lord say, “I have commissioned you to be their mother.” I rested in those words. After this moment, life did not become any easier, at all, but because I trust Him, I was able to continue to endure in the face of difficult circumstances.
Through seasons of single parenting, surrender, and trust, I’ve learned that God equips us for what He calls us to do and I learned that He loves those we care for even more than we do. One of my favorite verses remains Isaiah 54:13: “All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.” We make our plans but remember, God may have other plans—and His plans are always for good.
